Essay Titles and Terminology
A good approach to starting an essay is to ensure you understand the question. To do this you must:
  • First highlight the key words
  • Distinguish the content words from the task words
  • The task words tell you the type of essay required such as, descriptive, discursive, evaluative or comparative
  • Then look for the area of general focus, which is where you start. You could possibly start the essay by briefly explaining or defining the main topic
  • The remaining content words in the question direct you to the specific points that you should consider. These content words should be used to help you select the appropriate and relevant reading material. You can also use these words as sub-headings under which you briefly list the points, the ideas and information you have collected from source material.
