The International Council of Nurses (1987) states that "Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, famillies, groups and communities, sick or well, and in all settings. Nursing includes the promotion of health , prevention of illness, and the care of ill, disabled and dying people. Advocacy, promotion of a safe enviroment, research, participation in shaping health policy and in patient and health systems management, and education are also key nursing roles"
So, what is a nurse?
It can be said that a nurse is a highly trained and skilled professional who cares for the sick and infirm. They should be able to educate patients in issues of healthy living as well as any current or chronic disease process and treatment. Another role of a nurse is to perform treatments and procedures as prescribed by the appropriate health care professional; including nurse practitioners.
Nursing is combination of the art of caring coupled with scientific knowledge and skills acquired throughout their education and careers. Nursing is a lifelong learning experience and is a requirement of the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Nurses work in many different settings and perform duties related to the setting in which they work. A nurse's Scope of Practice is defined by the level of education and registration achieved.
