1st, 2nd or 3rd

1st and 2nd Person

When writing in 1st and 2nd person you can include personal pro-nouns such as, I, Me, My, We, Us etc. Using these pro-nouns makes the writing seem more colloquial and less formal. Therefore, this style of writing is best suited to reflective accounts because these reflect personal experiences and feelings surrounding events.

E.g.

During my mid-morning duties whilst in placement, I encountered a situation ........

3rd Person

When writing in 3rd person all personal pro-nouns described above are removed. The allows the style to be more formal an is best suited to academic writing such as essays.

E.g.

During mid-morning duties a situation developed........

Note

Avoid using phrases such as 'The author will discuss' as it sounds stilted, instead use phrases such as 'This essay will discuss'
